Mr. Echard is a 1973 graduate of the Duke University Physician Assistant Program. He worked five and one-half years with Lincoln Community Health Center as supervisor of the Bragtown Health Clinic. He returned to Lincoln Health center in 1998 to help establish a clinic for the homeless and currently works three nights per week in the clinic providing health care. He is currently in his 24th year working for the North Carolina Division of Prisons; he helped set up the medical departments at Wayne Correctional Center, Eastern Correctional Center and his present location at Polk Youth Institution.

Mr. Echard’s contributions include his role as co-founder and charter member of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants. He also served as chairman of the Minority Affairs Committee, chairman of the continuing Medical Education Committee and as a member of the Internal Audit Committee. He served on the Editorial Board of the Physician Assistant Journal, American Academy of Physician Assistants, as a member of the CME Committee, the Nominating Committee, and as chairman of the Minority Affairs Committee. He has also served on the Eligibility Committee of the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. He was a member of the Duke PA Programs Advisory Committee and its committee on recruitment and retention of minority students. He now serves on the Duke PA Alumni Steering Committee. He is a mentor to prospective PA students, allowing them to “shadow” him in his clinical practice.

Earl has been recognized by the AAPA for his work with the Minority Affairs Committee (1995), and received a special award of appreciation (1995) for his years of service and tireless work to enhance diversity in the PA profession. The Duke PA Programs gave him an award of appreciation for his work with the program in 1995, and he was named Distinguished Alumnus in 2003.
